The next turn around the sun
Today is a special day - the Winter Solstice. At exactly 10:59 am Eastern today, 7:59 am Pacific, the Earth in all of her glory will pass through the point in her orbit where our days start to lengthen again.
Today is the first day of Winter, and the shortest day/longest night of the year.
For me, the stretch of time beginning at the Winter Solstice and terminating in New Years Day are a time of rumination every year. The holidays always put me in a more reflective mood than one of jubilation.
As the astronomical year begins today in just about 2 hours, I hope you will mark the occasion. As our world becomes ever more full of digital mediation, connections with our planet become exponentially more important to us as humans.
I guess that makes it all the more ironic that I have an alarm set on my phone for the moment it happens. Nevertheless…
Wishing you the very best Solstice,
Philip
